Where African Heritage Meets Sustainable Fashion

There is a dream behind every seam. At Thatpurpledot (TPD), we believe fashion is more than what we wear. It is a way to express identity, celebrate culture, communicate confidence, and tell stories that deserve to be heard. Inspired by the richness of African heritage and the possibilities of contemporary fashion, Thatpurpledot creates clothing that brings together craftsmanship, comfort, originality, and elegance. Our work reflects a commitment to creating meaningful fashion that allows women to express their individuality while celebrating the beauty and diversity of African design. Founded by Sylvia Nwoko, also known as HeadGirl TPD, Thatpurpledot was built on a simple belief: clothing should do more than dress you; it should help you feel confident in who you are. Our mission is to sell confidence through clothes, while our vision is to project African fashion onto the global map. These principles influence how we design, source materials, work with artisans, and approach production. They also shape our understanding of the responsibility that comes with creating fashion in a world increasingly concerned with waste, resource consumption, and the future of the industry. For us, the future of African fashion lies in the ability to honour where we come from while exploring where our creativity can take us.

More Than Fashion: Our Approach to Design

Our collections bring African-inspired designs into conversation with contemporary global fashion. We celebrate cultural identity while embracing modern silhouettes, thoughtful design, and quality craftsmanship. Through our different product lines, we serve women with diverse styles, preferences, and occasions in mind. From African-inspired pieces and elegant everyday wear to bespoke couture and custom garments, our goal is to create clothing that combines versatility, quality, and personal expression. Beyond individual fashion, TPD also provides garment production solutions for clothing brands, businesses, and organisations. These services include private-label manufacturing, wholesale production, and customised garments. Across these offerings, one principle remains constant: we believe fashion should be intentional. The materials we choose, the details we incorporate, and the techniques we employ all contribute to the experience and value of the finished garment. This philosophy extends beyond appearance. It informs our approach to material innovation, cultural preservation, and sustainability.

Material Innovation: Discovering New Possibilities in Fabric

At Thatpurpledot Group, material innovation is central to our design and production process. We believe every fabric carries untapped potential and that its usefulness does not end when its original purpose has been fulfilled. This belief encourages us to look at textiles differently. Rather than automatically discarding leftover materials, we explore opportunities to transform them into something new, distinctive, and valuable. Our approach includes working with pre-consumer and post-consumer fabric remnants, which we shred, layer, and reconstruct to develop new textile surfaces. Through these techniques, we experiment with texture, composition, and visual expression while exploring alternative ways of using available materials. The process creates opportunities to develop distinctive fabric designs that reflect our creative identity. It also challenges the assumption that new garments must always begin with newly produced textiles. By incorporating reconstructed materials into our creative process, we aim to maximise the usefulness of available resources and reduce textile waste. What might otherwise be overlooked becomes an opportunity for experimentation and design. We prioritise cotton fabrics because of their breathability, durability, and biodegradability. Our reconstruction techniques can also be adapted to a wider range of textiles, allowing us to explore different material properties and creative possibilities. When combined with African fabrics and couture techniques, these methods open new possibilities for creating garments that are original, culturally expressive, and thoughtfully constructed. We see each reconstructed textile as an opportunity to demonstrate what can happen when creativity meets responsibility. At Thatpurpledot Couture, we believe that a fabric's story does not have to end with its first use. Sometimes, its next chapter is its most interesting.

African Heritage and Indigenous Craftsmanship

Our commitment to innovation is deeply connected to our respect for tradition. African heritage is an important source of inspiration for Thatpurpledot, informing our appreciation of textiles, craftsmanship, and the stories carried through clothing. African fabrics are more than decorative materials. They reflect the creativity, knowledge, and cultural traditions of the people and communities behind them. Their patterns, textures, and production techniques connect contemporary fashion to generations of artistic expression. We work with indigenous fabrics such as Aṣọ Oke and Adire, drawing inspiration from their distinctive qualities and cultural significance. Our process includes guiding the creation of these fabrics in collaboration with artisans in Ibadan and Abeokuta. These collaborations allow us to bring traditional textile craftsmanship into conversation with contemporary design. By exploring modern silhouettes and new ways of styling indigenous fabrics, we create garments that honour their origins while speaking to the tastes and lifestyles of today's woman. Our approach is to demonstrate how tradition with modernity can coexist. We believe African fashion can be contemporary without losing its identity. Traditional textiles can move beyond familiar applications and find expression in designs that appeal to diverse audiences, including those engaging with African fashion on global platforms. This relationship between heritage and innovation is central to our creative philosophy. It enables us to celebrate the richness of African culture while contributing to its continued relevance in a changing fashion landscape.

Sustainability: Designing With Responsibility

At Thatpurpledot Group, sustainability is more than a concept we discuss; it is a principle that guides how we think about design and production. We recognise that fashion involves choices about materials, manufacturing, consumption, and the resources used to create each garment. These choices have implications beyond the finished product, making it important for us to consider how our creative processes can become more responsible. Our approach begins with accountability. From fabric selection to finishing, we seek to make decisions that reduce unnecessary waste, maximise the value of available materials, and encourage a more thoughtful relationship with clothing. One way we pursue this goal is through material reuse and textile reconstruction. By exploring the potential of fabric remnants, we create opportunities to reduce waste and challenge the assumption that leftover textiles have little further value. However, our understanding of sustainability extends beyond how materials are used. It also influences how we think about the longevity of the garments we create. We believe clothing should become a meaningful part of a woman's wardrobe, not simply something worn briefly before being forgotten. Quality craftsmanship, durable textiles, and considered designs can encourage people to value and care for their garments for longer. We aim to create pieces that women can wear, appreciate, and preserve, with designs that offer more than temporary appeal. We also recognise the cultural dimension of sustainability. Working with African textiles and indigenous craftsmanship creates opportunities to celebrate traditional knowledge and maintain connections between fashion, identity, and heritage. By bringing together waste reduction, material reuse, craftsmanship, and cultural expression, we seek to demonstrate how sustainability can become a practical part of fashion design.

Our Commitment to the Future of African Fashion

At Thatpurpledot, we see the future of fashion as an opportunity to build on the richness of African creativity while exploring more thoughtful ways to design and produce clothing. Our work brings together several interconnected ideas: the beauty of African heritage, the possibilities of material innovation, the value of indigenous craftsmanship, and the importance of responsible design. Each contributes to how we understand fashion and the role we want to play within it. Through our collections, we aim to show that African-inspired fashion can be contemporary, versatile, and globally relevant without losing its cultural depth. Through our exploration of reconstructed textiles, we seek new ways to use materials and create distinctive designs. Through our engagement with indigenous fabrics and artisans, we celebrate the knowledge and craftsmanship that make African textiles meaningful. And through our commitment to sustainability, we continue to explore how quality, creativity, and resourcefulness can shape a more considered approach to fashion. We recognise that building a more sustainable fashion system requires continuous learning, experimentation, and improvement. Our approach will continue to evolve as we explore new materials, techniques, and opportunities for collaboration. What remains constant is our belief that fashion should create value beyond appearance. It should celebrate identity, inspire confidence, respect craftsmanship, and encourage us to think more carefully about the choices we make.
